PS3 Linux Distributions
Linux is an Open Source Operating system. An operating system is something like Windows XP or Mac OSX, and it basically allows you to use your computer. Linux is Open Source, which means it is free software, and also anyone can maintain or develop it, as long as they have the right tools. In this intel, I will use the word 'distributions'. This word means version, so Linux has Ubuntu and Fedora just like Windows has XP and Vista. The Sony PlayStation 3 is capable of comfortably running certain Linux distributions. These includeFedora 8, Ubuntu, OpenSuSE and Yellow Dog (the last of which was especially developed for Sony in 2006). Yellow Dog is by far the most popular option amongst PS3 users, but it is closely followed by Fedora and Ubuntu. All the distributions are able to run the usual applications you would expect to find on a Linux installation, and some installs come with open source software such as OpenOffice.org, Rhythmbox, GIMP and more. |
